"Chocolate Soldier"

   Hello,
Could you please tell me if you have ever heard of a plant called a: Chocolate Soldier. I got one of these plants years ago, and it was known by that name. Since then I have looked everywhere for it and have tried to look it up, but to no avail. It must no longer be referred to by that name. It has sort of oval shaped leaves that are green and silver(?) It vines down and later produces a orangish or reddish small flower. I have been looking this plant up but have yet to find it. Have any idea what I am talking about? If you do, could you tell me what conditions it would tolerate such as light, which direction of window, fertilizer etc., and also where could I get one of these plants. THANK YOU

   Hi,
Have you tried going to the biggest plant nursery in your area and asking someone who is knowledgeable about their stock if they have anything that matches your description. Your description is good and helpful.

This is the problem with using informal names for plants. Once John and I didn't know the name of a plant that we got seeds of from his Aunt. So we named it "Dorothy" after her until years later when we discovered it was Amaranth! Imagine if we would have passed on seeds to friends and told them it was "Dorothy"!

Hope you find your plant!
Diane

I have one and my grandmother treated it like a violet for watering and feeding it violet food just like violets. Hope this helps you.

I know the plant that you are looking for, I do have a black and white picture of it. I have been looking for this very plant, years ago my grand mother had one and it was very beautiful.

Many years ago I had a chocolate soldier. I was told it was of the African Violet family. By now you probably have the information you require. I went on line today to obtain information on a couple of my house plants and found Logee's Greenhouse. They show a great picture of the "Episcia" commonly known as the Chocolate Soldier.

   Hello,
I also have been looking for Chocolate Soldier. Someone is going to give me a small plant. I have no idea the proper name yet but wondered if you had learned anything from your posting. I hear the plant likes the same light conditions as african violets do. I'd appreciate any info you have.

Thanks,
Lori
