"pruning weeping cherry tree"

I need some basic help in how and when to prun a weeping cherry tree. Should I cut the water sprouts off or will they eventually bend over to help shape the tree?

   Hi Vincent,
The growth you see going straight up is from the root stock the weeping stock is grafted to. This is undesirable growth and needs to be pruned out; it will never 'weep'. Often the root stock is the stronger of the two in a grafted tree and if not kept in check will take over.

Fall is not a good time to prune trees or shrubs because it can stimulate new growth that doesn't have time to harden off before winter sets in. The new growth is too tender and can easily suffer 'winter kill'. Late winter pruning when the tree is dormant is the preferred time.

Prune out any branches not weeping at the trunk where they originate being careful to leave a 'collar'. The collar is a swollen area near the trunk and it will sometimes look wrinklely. Leaving a collar will help the tree heal quicker. But don't leave stubs sticking out either.

If you need a diagram to follow check out some tree care books at the library. Pruning can be enjoyable once you have some background in the correct procedures.

Bye, Diane

I have purchashed a weeping cherry tree last year, and would like to know how to prun the long branches that are to long at the bottom.
Keeping the unbrella look. When and where should I prun and what time of the year?

   Hi Arline,
Go to a reputable nursery that sells weeping trees and have them demonstate for you the area on the branches you can trim. I have often seen weeping trees just trimmed all along the ends of the branches, like a haircut. I don't know where you live so I don't know your what your weather is like right now. Look on our zone map page to figure out what planting zone you are.
Diane

I have a weeping cherry whip. It doesn't seem to want to make branches. The one branch grew almost to the ground, so I clipped the branch to about 2ft. from the bend at the top. now it looks like a shephrds hook. Small branches are starting along the end of this branch but not on the trunk. I want to have many branches coming out of the top. I like the umbrella shape.
Can someone tell me what to do?
Thanks, Val
