"Tomatos"

I purchased 2 sets of growing containers for my bush celebrities. These sets included of course a large container, moisture wicking soil, fertilizer, a sturdy tomato cage and some sort of red plastic for underneath the plants. Within 3 weeks the tomatoes were healthy and lush with flowers and small fruit. Within days some sort of disease had struck. The leaves were curling, yellowing with brown spots and the fruit was becoming deformed with cracks, spots and creases. The red plastic when lifted revealed moldy soil. Nothing seemed to help these four plants so I had to destroy them. Now I know nothing is fool proof but dang what happened? The extra tomatoes I bought and took a chance on are doing well in the garden about 10 yards away in a spot that 2 years ago destroyed them with blight. I doused them well with soil soup and so far so good. Am I over complicating this situation? The cukes, sugar pumpkins, gourds and all the other ornamentals are fine and healthy.

   Hi Elvera,
Using your compost tea (soil soup) will be the best defense against any disease. I couldn't find a description in my reference book that matched your's exactly but you are on the right track for taking care of the problem; destroy and replant in another area.
Not all diseases cross over to different types of plants so if they look healthy and you are using Soil Soup I wouldn't worry. Sorry I can't pinpoint the disease.
Diane
