Hi John, Legumes (peas being one) ‘fix’ nitrogen in the soil. When properly inoculated, peas will not only have increased yields but will also add more nitrogen to the soil for plants to use than if they weren’t inoculated. Inoculating isn’t mandatory but you will have more peas, healthy soil and even more organic matter in the form of top growth to turn into the soil for the following year. I have noticed a difference when I inoculate my peas. Be sure to get the proper inoculant for the legume you are planting. Just make sure you are asking for one for ‘peas’. It is very inexpensive and worth the small investment for the return in a larger crop. You can get inoculant from Johnnys Seeds (www.johnnyseeds.com ), Peaceful Valley (www.groworganic.com ) or maybe in a good nursery or feed store locally. If you get any seed catalogs in the mail perhaps they have it. If you don’t get seed catalogs go to Tip of the Week, January 20th for a list of catalogs you can ask for free. Best, Diane
