"container tomato's"

I use 5 gal.containers to grow tomato's in and I used 6 ft. stakes to hold the tomato plants up and MG potting soil but they would not hold tight when the wind blew. They would shift the way the wind blew. The question is how and what can I do to keep the stakes stright up and down? Does anyone have input on this. If so thanks in advance.

   Hi Ken,
We have some ideas but we need more information such as:

Are the buckets on the ground or on patio or porch?
Do the plants grow 6 feet tall?
What are the stakes made out of?
Have you considered a determinate tomato? They are best for containers.
Did your plants produce enough for you? I ask this because a tomato grown in soil have root systems that can reach 7 feet across and 4 or more feet deep.

As soon I we know more about the situation we can give you some ideas.
Bye, Diane

Hi again, sorry I didn't give you enough information. I'll answer your questions. 1. Yes, the buckets are on the ground in a raised flower bed 72 ft.long and 26 to 30in. wide and between 8in. high on one end and 36in. on the other end and between black-eyed susans and mums which I didn't pinch back this year because I didn't know anything about mums. 2. Yes they have all grown more than 6ft. tall. 3. The steaks are 1x1 6ft.wood. The kinds of tomato's I grew were Early Girl,Rutgers,Ramapo and Supersonic and I had so many tomatoe's that I had to give some away. Next year I'm going to start seeds in the basement because I grew what the nurseries had on hand. Not what I would like to grow. 4. Yes, I'm going to grow determininate tomato's next year. Siletz and early pick VF and crack free tomato's also. Another thing I forgot to tell you. I have 4 container's that are 17in. wide and 15in. high. They worked very well also. I've been thinking that if I make a 1x1 hole in the bottom of the bucket and put the one end in the hole and cut 4 1x1 short peace's and put them on the in side edge of the bucket and on the stake making an X I'll still be able to water and it should support the steak's. What do you think? Unless there's a better way I think that's what I'll do. Again, Thank's for any help you can give me. Ken Cameron

   Hi Ken,
Glad to hear you had plenty of tomaotes. Check out some of our past 'Tip of the Week' recently, especially about freezing whole tomatoes and then using them later. You also might want to go back to a TOTW in January where we list our favorite veggies, why, and where to find them. Also check out at our 'Home' page 'Growing the Earliest Ripe Tomatoes'. Tomatoes are one of our specialties.

You took the words right out of our mouths with the idea of a hole in the buckets to accomodate the stakes. Seems to be the way to go.

Isn't is sad when the tomatoes and peppers get hit with freezing temps? The peppers always have so much life left in them.

Bye, Diane
