Hi, The first year we grew watermelons we didn't have much success with picking at the correct time. Some were not ripe, others were too ripe, a few were correct. Since then I have had great success with looking at the bottom of the melon. If you see a yellow area and the rind is dull the watermelon is ripe.

Don't go by size; I have all ready picked 5 melons (perfect ripeness) that were smaller than a larger one that is still out in the garden. It hasn't developed that yellow spot yet, so there it sets, contiuning to get larger.

I haven't had much success with the 'thumping' method either.

Enjoy your melons, Diane

Hi, Well I never said I know everything. In fact when it comes to gardening there are always things to learn, every single year.

I discovered that that not all melons will develop the yellow spot on the bottom, most will but not all. I finally picked a couple that didn't get the yellow spot and they were ripe. They were very ripe!

So look for the yellow spots but if there are some that are about the size of the ripe ones but no yellow spots you should consider picking them.

Bye, Diane
