"Penstemon in the wrong place!"

Dianne- I bought and planted several types of Penstemons without really paying attenion to how tall and lanky they were going to get. Now they are flopping over in the fron of my beds while shorter plants behind them are wishing they would take a backseat. At first I was just going to yank them out because I didn't like the effect when I saw how they are suppose to look when planted properly. Nice! When and how would be the best way to move them? Now that I see the form of these plants I would like to make several "stands" in areas where I need width and height- in front of my geraniums and dahlias is not the place!LOL!Note- If you want to plant these puppies- plant a few together so that they support each other-they get tall and skinny and need to be in a bunch to get the effect you see in the pictures. -Thanks Kitty

Hi Kitty, This would make a good entry for the question, "what won't you do again in your garden?" You said LOL, actually I did chuckle when I pictured them in front of your geraniums. Isn't it amazing no matter how many years we have gardened there are still lessons to learn?

I have moved perennials with good success almost anytime of the growing season. I realized they say to transplant this or that at this or that time. But I have found as long as the transplant is tended to and kept watered very few don't adjust to a move.

Usually I would wait until the blooming period is over so as not to miss the blooms. Sometimes a plant will stop blooming when they are moved. But in this case, in front of your geraniums and dahlias, I think a move now would be in order.

If you can wait for a weather report of a rainy day coming, this is the best time. Not only are plants watered well but also the cloud cover helps with recovery.

I have also started doing something new when moving or receiving perennials from friends. I pot them up and let them grow on my porch for awhile. They are easier to keep watered and also this gives them protection from the harsh sun. Once the roots are established move them to their permanent home.

Bye, Diane
