"Planting Cleome"

I just purchased a Cleome plant that is about 2' tall from a 5 gallon size container. Just a few days after I planted we seemed to have a windy, hot spell that continues.

The plant is badly wilting, bottom leaves are turning yellow and the puppy has chewed off one of the stems despite the prickly things on the stems.

I have been watering this plant every day. And have put up a shade cloth along side to get a little shade in our intense sun.

I am hoping it will survive both the weather AND the puppy. Can you give me any advise on watering? How long? My soil is very good, not sandy and not clay but more loamy sandy, if that makes any sense.

Thank you for any help you can offer. Also, do these propogate by cuttings?

   Hi,
Puppies eat amazing things, don’t they!?! It sounds as if you are on the right track nursing it back to health and only time will tell if it is enough. As to the watering, keeping it watered is good but don’t water log it. They like well-drained moist soil so your soil sounds good for it. Cleome grow easily from seed so you might want to try finding an inexpensive packet of seeds at the garden center and start some from seeds for little money. I don’t know about rooting them from cuttings, I haven’t tried that. If you had plenty I would say go for it and experiment but since it is your only one I don’t know what to say.

Here in Michigan, zone 5, Cleome is treated like an annual. Hope we are talking about the same plant. But I do know ours have “prickly things” also so at least they are similar.
Have you talked to the place you bought it from? Since you live in the same zone maybe they have further insight about this plant than I do.

Happy Gardening,
Diane

Thank you for the good advice. So far the shade cloth seems to really help. The plant is no longer wilting and the puppy is keeping her distance. We have had some very hot, breezy days. So far, so good!

I will look for some Cleome seeds to plant also. I understand that the established plants very freely re-seed so that is good.

They are a very unusual and beautiful plant with delightful flowers. One plant is definately not enough!!! I have seen pictures of several planted together and they were very striking. They are supposed to be "butterfly friendly".
