"Hydrangeas"

I recently had to transplant a beautiful Hydrangea bush. We widened the driveway and to move it over a few feet. After being out of the ground (it was really hot)for just a couple of hours the entire plant, leaves and flowers had wilted. We put back in the ground just a few feet over from where it had been with really good soil and watered it alot. The next morning I thought it looked OK. We went on vacation and my neighbor assured me he watered it weel. It has been over a week and the poor thing is still quite wilted. I know sometimes plants go into shck when you uproot them, but I'm concerned about this one. When we water it we leave the hose at the base flowing with a trickle for about 1/2 hr to an hour. Is this the best way to water it??

Thanks, Denise

   Hi,
Yes, leaving the hose to soak the area is great. You also might need to cut it back, depending on the type of hydrangea it is, to help it survive. When a plant is stressed it takes much out of it keeping the top growth alive. If all it has to contend with is the root ball it is easier for it to recover. You would cut back any types that die down to the ground in the winter or a type that grows new growth easily. For example: I wouldn't cut back a PeeGee bush or tree but would an Oakleaf hydrangea.

Wish your plant well, Diane

This is in regards to the answer for the hydrangea question. So, your saying for now just water it and before the winter cut it back. Or should I cut it back now??

Thanks, Denise

It all depends on the type of hydrangea you have.

My Hydrangea Bush is just beautiful with green leaves, but there are no flowers on it. This is the first year that the flowers did not bud on this bush. Some people are telling me it is because of the extreamely cold winter we had. What do you think? I will wait for a reply. Thank you. Joyce

   Hi Joyce,
Has it bloomed before? Your message seems to imply that it has. I ask because I have a hydrangea that has NEVER bloomed. I even brought it from my other house thinking it needed another location and that didn't budge it either. It was the type you get around Easter time with big showy balls of blooms. How about yours? Do you know the type it is?

I have other hydrangeas that bloom nicely.

Diane

Would it be OK to cut down a Hydrangea Serrata Precioza before the winter... just purchased this week and still in bloom, but noticed that it needs water every morning... also I planted it next to the foundation.. does it need more protection...

I have a twisted hydrangea. Strangely, the blooms never opens. I feed and water it the same as my regular hydrangea which constantly gives me huge beautiful blooms. Should I remove both from my shaded front porch? They get plenty of indirect light. Perhaps it is not a hydrangea after all. It sure looks like one though.

Please advise. Thank you!
