"night blooming plant"

I have a plant that I have not been able to identify. It is a yellow perennial that grows to about 4feet. It has 4 fragrant yellow petals that open after sunset and die by midmorning. I can actually watch the petals open, like time lapse photography. I have not been able to find this plant listed in my perennial books and hope you will be able to give me some information about it. Thank you

   Hi Elaine,
I think you have an Evening Primrose, although unless I could see it I can't know for sure. But what you discribed sure makes me think that it is.

Evening Primrose - Oenothera Family (several different ones)

The one that opens at night is called Missouri Primrose or Ozark Sundrops -missourensis

They have large yellow flowers and tolerant of poor soil in sunny locations.

Use that name and see if you can find a picture for I.D.

Your library may have a perennial book called Taylor's Guide to Perennials. I really like this book because it has a large selection with pictures categorized by colors. It really helps for finding things.

Happy Gardening, Diane

   Hi,

My husband and I happened by a neighbour who summoned us to view what they called a 'moonflower' (they may have made up this name), with a description very similar to yours. At dusk, the yellow flower unfurls, and by morning, either dies or closes (we didn't stay that long). I too, would like to know the name of this mysterious flower.

Tanya

   Hi,
There is indeed a plant called moonflower that only blooms at night. I am familar with it having white blossoms. If there is another color someone let us know.

Diane
