"Mums"

I have mums that need to be divided. When is the best time to do this? Any other tips on mums would be appreciated.
Thank You,

Hardy Mums need a small amount of attention early in the season. For approximately the first 6 to 8 weeks of new growth you need to pinch off 1/3 of the height 3 times. For example in Zone 5 that computes to having done the last pinching by July 4th. This will cause your plants to be full and have a good shape. (Sometimes if I have a slow growing mum, I won’t pinch so much off but I will pinch to encourage bushiness.) Mums need to be thinned out every 3 to 4 years. Dig up the edges of the plant to make new starts, making nice clumps of new growth with at least 3 stems to each clump. The inside of the plant (mother plant) can be thrown into the compost pile. You are making a compost pile aren’t you?

The rule of thumb for dividing mums and other fall folwering plants is to divide them in the spring. Any flowers that blooms in the sping divide in the fall and fall blooming plant divide in the spring.

   Hi Korinne,
Excellent advice, somehow I missed the "when" part of the question. I am glad you added your comments. This is why I need more people adding to the forum. Sometimes things pass right by.

Bye, Diane

hi. i am new to this flower business and in october, bought potted mums at home depot for the front of my new house. i left them in the pots. they are dying now which i assume is normal as we head into winter in new jersey. my questions is, will this bloom again next year in october? and if so, what do i do w/ them until then? i am really clueless this.

then i have the same question about poinsettias which i purchased last night at sams club and have in pots out front.

any help is greatly appreciated.
