Question: What would you do if there were pumpkins spreading through your whole vegetable patch and your trying to make little walk ways in between the vegetables?
Answer: Hi Hannah, Everyday you will need to turn the pumpkin vines back into the area you are trying to keep them. They will keep trying to grow into your walk ways, you will need to be diligent and keep turning then vines away from your paths.
The farm where I live keeps their pumpkins and winter squash away from all other crops because they are such active growers and want to take over everything. I know someone who has a small garden and they can’t grow pumpkins because of this problem. They also can’t grow sweet corn because it wants lots of room too. In this garden they grow cucumbers (which have similar growing problems, too long of vines) up on trellising or fencing. It saves lots of room. But pumpkins are a lot heavier than cucumbers and if you were to grow them on a fence you would need to support each pumpkin with some kind of sling to hold them up.
This shows how important lessons learned can be. Bet you won’t grow pumpkins again in a small area! Every year you grow things you will learn more and more. There are always lessons to learn. Keep a notebook to make notes each year and soon you will know more about growing gardens than most people! It is great you are gardening and growing veggies. Bravo!
