What kind of bugs are good for your garden and what kind are bad. Why?
Hi Hannah, First make sure you read our pages “Scary Things in the Garden” on our Kids Home page. Here is a partial list for bugs we have in Michigan, where I live on a farm:
Good (These bugs are meat eaters and eat bad bugs.) Spiders (although they really aren’t bugs) Ants (I saw some ants the other day attacking a wire worm. Wire worms damage plants. They eat other things too.) Hornets (they take away for food those green cabbage worms, they latch unto the them and fly away!) Solider bugs Lady Beetles (they love aphids) Lacewings Praying Mantis Honey Bees (They don’t eat other bugs but are important for pollinating so we can grow food.)
Bad (All these bugs eat plants and crops. Vegetarian bugs are bad for gardens.) Squash Bugs Cucumber Beetles Colorado Potato Beetle Mexican Bean Beetles Corn Bore Squash Vine Bore Emerald Ash Beetle Gypsy Moth Aphids Whitefly
Since you live in Delaware and get snow like we do you probably have similar bugs. But you might also have some different ones we don’t have in Michigan.
Have a Great Spring! Hoot
