Question Please help us, I am trying to start a school garden for my elementary school in the Lakota School District(Ohio). I don't know what to do to get started or where to start. I would love some advice please. Also...does anyone know how to get seeds of of fall mums? I thought our school could start with collecting fall mum seeds and planting them in the early spring. > Thank you for your help, > Kevin Vidourek > Physical Education Teacher

Answer Hi Kevin, The gardening help you need might all ready be on our web site at www.homeandgardensite.com Go to the New Gardeners page and read all about growing. Our Children's pages also have info.

To grow indoors you will need sufficient light for plants. We use fluorescent fixtures with fresh bulbs, one warm and one cool for plant lights or you can go more expensive. We have a new set up that covers a larger area; a metal halide HDI fixture. But they are expensive. You also need good potting soil and to keep them healthy liquid fertilizer. Growing indoors takes experience and diligence. It is more difficult than growing outside due to lack of sunshine, good air movement, soil that readily drains with all the organisms for healthy plants, etc.

Cuttings from mums is another possiblity but you need someone's 'hands-on' direction; more than I can give you here. A good helpful local nursery should be able to help give you some hands-on help.

You can read someone else’s question and answer about this subject by going to http://www.thegardenhelper.com/mumseeds.html
