Question:

Dear Diane and John, I read your tip on how to make a butterfly feeder, but don't where to get cow or horse manure. Where do I go for that? Thank you. Katy

Answer:

Hi Katy, Thank-you for your question to 'Hoot's' new page. Hoot was very excited because this is his first question!

If you live anywhere near a horse or cow farm the people who live there would probably be more than happy to give you some. If you don't, go to a garden center or even something like Kmart or Wal-mart. They usually sell cow manure in bags and it won't cost very much money.

You will only need a little bit for your butterfly feeder so if you get a bag of manure use the left overs to fertilize any flowers or vegetables you have in your yard. Just spread in around the plants. They will be so very happy!

The other day I put out the round bottom of a watermelon rind in my flower garden. It had plenty of watermelon juice laying in the 'bowl'. I saw a butterfly land on it and start to drink the juice. It stayed there for a very long time, it must have really liked it! You might want to try that also.

Hope to hear from you again! Diane, John and Hoot
